There is so much awareness around the importance of wellness and safe space and yet burnout, anxiety and stress are on the increase within our organisations.
Something is not working, but what?
We run training programmes, we go on development activities, we focus attention at certain times of the year, often with limited impact. Granted, there are those that lead the field but sadly they are the exception rather than the rule.
My work has led me to believe that wellness and safe space are an inside out job as much as an outside in job.
What do I mean by that?
Well, yes we certainly do need to increase knowledge and learn about new skills. However, the benefit only materialises when we take personal accountability to put the learning into practise every single day, no matter how fast the day passes by.
This is even more important for those of us who hold the honour of a leadership title. Responsibility for others is a privilege that demands a commitment to self-development, awareness and growth.
Certainly at an individual level, those big goals and fancy promises we make to ourselves in the height of the moment are rarely achieved. It’s those boring micro-actions that we commit to do every single day. Those small 5% improvement type shifts that we are able to put our attention on every single day that eventually delivers the change we crave.
For example, what tiny small things can we do every day to relieve our stress? It can be as simple as making sure we take a 5-minute walk outside or doubling the amount of water we drink. Almost insignificant, yet consistently applied, over time, so powerful. The same is as true at team and organisational level as it is at individual level.
Where could your 5 daily micro-actions take you?
